Pick the pad by how much cut you need: blue for cutting, orange for a one-step, black for finishing. Lake Country's HDO lineup comes in those three foams, and the colors map to stiffness. Once you know what each one does, choosing gets simple.
Other brands use different colors, but the idea is the same everywhere. Here's how each pad works, which ones to pair for your process, and how paint hardness changes the choice.
The three HDO foam pads
Each color is a different foam stiffness, and stiffness controls how much cut you get.
- Blue (stiff): the cutting pad. Use it to remove swirls, scratches and heavier defects.
- Orange (medium): the one-step pad. It cuts enough to correct and finishes well enough to leave on its own.
- Black (soft): the finishing pad. Use it to refine the paint after cutting, and for applying wax or sealant.
Matching pads to your process
The rule of thumb: the stiffer the pad, the more cut. The softer the pad, the less cut.
- Two-step correction: cut with blue, then finish with black.
- One-step polish: use orange for the whole job.
It's not always that cut and dry. The paint in front of you can push you toward a stiffer or softer pad than your plan called for.
Soft paints vs. hard paints
Paint hardness decides how far you lean on each pad.
Soft paints typically don't need as much cut. But a very soft pad can leave haze behind. It's often easier to do most of the work with a stiffer pad, then finish on a slightly firmer pad than you'd expect.
Hard paints resist correction. You'll have to mow them down, so expect to reach for the harder, stiffer pads.
When to use microfiber instead
For most paints, a microfiber pad can do the job instead of foam, and it brings extra cut. Lake Country's microfiber pads are backed with the same foams as the HDO lineup.
- Blue microfiber: your heavy-cut cutting pad.
- Orange microfiber: your one-step cutting pad.
